The Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) and Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc (SAHCO) have jointly announced a substantial 75% increase in handling inbound and outbound cargo rates which took effect 24th April, 2023.

Following the new tariff amendment, general cargo/bank consignment charges per kilogramme rose from N63.30 to N110.78, demurrage charge per kilogramme was increased from N13 to N22.75,re-registration was pegged at N15,000 from N4,420.

Freight Forwarders and Clearing Agents at airports nationwide are to pay more for the cargo handling tariff rate, as well as clearing of inbound and outbound cargoes under the new tariff arrangement, put in place by the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company, NAHCO and Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc (SAHCO) which took effect from November 2019.

This was contained in a statement signed by both NAHCO and SAHCO, that the 40% increment became necessary as a result of the economic realities.

According to the new tariff, general cargo and bank consignment is now N65.30, a total departure from the initial N46.60 per kilogram (kg). Demurrage charges now moved to N13 from N11.05 per kg, courier jumped to N76 from N54.00 per kg while COA increased from N58.50 to N82 per kg.

Meanwhile, strong room storage slightly increased from N23.40 to N25 per kilogram while human remains increased from N58.50 to N60 per kilogram. Export charges, however, jumped from N28.00 to N39 per kg.
Other fees, such as freezer, vault, minimum charge, late registration, and e-registration remain sacrosanct.

Sources hint that the only way to develop the industry and make the air cargo industry in Nigeria a world-class is to allow a tariff review which would encourage investment in equipment and human resource.
